Design and 3D modeling, in general

CAD is a group of software applications designed for the use in geometric modeling, design and drafting of 2D and 3D models. A model is a representation of a set of objects, or entities, used to represent some real world thing. Models are used in engineering, for example when drafting building plans, as well as in the natural and social sciences. CAD applications are not just useful for drawings of technical designs, such as railway tracks or building drawings, but also for representing more abstract concepts.

The fundamental properties of a model are the entities and relations between them. Usually, models are hierarchical (parent-child relationships) but they can also be non-hierarchical. In a model, every entity has a unique identity, i.e. it has an identifier, and this identifier can be used to refer to it. In the example in the left image of the figure above, there is a unique identifier for each rectangle (in black), a unique identifier for the entire parent rectangle (in light grey), and a unique identifier for the entire drawing (in dark grey). Most often, there is a relationship between an entity and its parent. This can be a general relationship (e.g. parent to child, owning to owned), or a particular type of relationship such as containment (e.g. a room inside a house).

Autodesk product families

AutoCAD software applications are available for Windows, Mac OS X, iOS, Android and as a web app for the web browser. Each version has a unique identity and shares some functionality with the other versions.

AutoCAD Architecture

AutoCAD is divided into sub-applications. The applications themselves are divided into a set of layers, each of which correspond to a different area of functionality. The layers are:

Model Viewer : Provides a user interface for viewing models.

: Provides a user interface for viewing models. Drawing Viewer : Provides a user interface for viewing drawings.

: Provides a user interface for viewing drawings. Layout Viewer : Provides a user interface for viewing layouts.

: Provides a user interface for viewing layouts. Data Manager : Provides a data management system.

: Provides a data management system. Presenter : Provides a graphical user interface.

: Provides a graphical user interface. Licensing: Performs license validation and renewal, and provides other licensing functionality.

e.g. AutoCAD Architecture is a plugin that adds architectural drawing capabilities to AutoCAD.

Each year AutoCAD produces a product known as a release version. Version numbers may start with 0 and AutoCAD Architecture for example may have a version number of 0.8.2.

AutoCAD was first released as AutoLISP in 1987 by Autodesk and has since undergone several major evolutions in the design of its language and code.

AutoCAD is currently in release version 20.0.

AutoLISP was originally created as an in-house language by Autodesk in 1987. It was later donated to the public domain. The first release of AutoCAD was 1.0 which was released in 1990. In 2008, a new development system called “AutoLISP Script” was added to AutoCAD. This new development system is written in AutoLISP and is a tool for extending AutoCAD.

AutoLISP is a visual programming language that was originally developed for AutoCAD by Autodesk and was released in 1987. The language is built on top of a LISP dialect called Lisp Machine Lisp (LM-LISP). The language is still supported today by Autodesk.

AutoLISP provides several enhancements in the way AutoCAD programs are written. The main enhancement is the ability to specify variable values during program execution. Variables can be defined by the user, used in expressions and given default values in the source code.

Programs written in AutoLISP are called AutoLISP scripts. Although they are visual, they are still LISP programs. This allows AutoLISP scripts to be analyzed by the compiler, which provides many advantages. For example, it allows the compiler to see where loops are and to detect memory problems (e.g. a function over-writing itself).

As the name AutoLISP suggests, AutoLISP scripts can be run as macros from AutoCAD. This allows developers to automate routine tasks, such as resizing drawing items. Scripts may also call other macros or AutoLISP scripts.

AutoLISP was originally written in a dialect called LM-LISP. This dialect was based on commercial Lisp machines, such as Symbolics Genera and Lisp Machines Inc. Other dialects of LISP

Click on the arrow icon next to the pull-down menu on the Layers panel and select New Layer
Double-click on the Layer named “Silver Placeholder”
Name the new layer “Tray”
Click on the top menu icon (File, Section, Subsection and all the way to object) and select Drawing Tools – Profile – Profile Boundary
In the new window, click on the “Tab Boundary” button
In the newly opened window, select the “Isometric” section, the drop-down menu near the top of the window and select Standard Conic
Click on the drop-down menu beside the “Standard Conic” option and select Conic
In the newly opened window, click on the arrow icon (next to the pull-down menu) and select “Add-points-to-segments”
Select the “Center of profile” option and drag the black arrow icon to the end of the center line
Double-click on the segment created by the “Add-points-to-segments” function
Select “Start”, “End”, “Center”, “Angle”, “Radius”, “Cross-over” and then select “Totally Conic” from the pull-down menu near the top of the window
Click on the new conic and then click on the “Select All” tab
Double-click on the “Totally Conic” segment and select Edit – Displace – Profile
In the new window, select the “Center of profile” option and drag the black arrow icon to the end of the center line
Drag the red line to the right
Select the “Remove” option
Double-click on the segment created by the “Remove” function

What’s New in the AutoCAD?

Import user feedback to instantly incorporate user edits into your AutoCAD drawings. The system learns from previous drawings and will not repeatedly import feedback if the same change has been previously made. You can then review user feedback, make the change, and save the drawing again. (video: 1:30 min.)

Create a palette of commonly used symbols: Increase efficiency by drawing the same symbols over and over again, rather than creating them from scratch every time. The symbols are also embedded in AutoCAD to make it easy to access. (video: 1:45 min.)

You can also see a demonstration of the Symbols palette in action. (video: 1:53 min.)

Drawing guidelines using 2D extents: Use 2D extents (Extents) to create drawing guidelines with any 2D axis in the drawing. Use the Default 2D Extents command to automatically create drawing guidelines with any 2D axis, based on the absolute coordinates of a line or surface. (video: 2:37 min.)

Scale view and create documentation for imported drawings: See how drawings are automatically scaled for use in AutoCAD Architecture. Use the scale view option to find automatically scaled drawings and exported DWG (drawing) documents on the AutoCAD Platform. (video: 2:35 min.)

A scale view is also available for regular drawings, so you can more easily see the size of your drawings. (video: 2:54 min.)

2D Tool Tips:

Allow users to have any number of options for tool tips. You can now manage tool tips and labels that you assign to drawing objects and edit tool tips when the user hovers over an object. (video: 1:30 min.)

Find an example of tool tips in use. (video: 1:55 min.)

Use the Edit Region tool to edit imported drawings: The Edit Region tool now lets you make quick edits to imported drawings. Use the Edit Region command to edit imported drawings, based on the absolute coordinates of a line or surface. (video: 2:07 min.)

Create viewports on 2D objects: You can now place viewports on 2D objects, such as lines and surfaces. You can use the 2D Extents command to specify the viewports, and you can use the viewport features to create a viewport that is automatically placed in a specified location. (video: 2:27 min.)
